Trailer Landing Gear: Leg, Gearbox, and Crank Faults
Landing gear that won't crank or won't hold strands the trailer. We cover the gearbox, legs, and the cross-shaft.
Won't crank or won't hold
Landing gear faults fall into two buckets: it won't crank (gearbox or cross-shaft failure, or a leg binding) or it cranks but won't hold (internal leg damage, stripped gear, or a failed one-way clutch). A leg that drops under the trailer's weight is a serious hazard — the trailer can fall during a drop or hook.
Gearbox vs. leg
We isolate by disconnecting the cross-shaft: if the gearbox cranks freely but a leg won't move, the leg is the fault (bent, corroded, or stripped). If the gearbox is the problem (stripped gears, failed clutch, broken handle), we replace or service the gearbox. Corrosion and lack of grease are the leading causes of both.
How MTG handles it
Landing gear replacement is a heavier roadside or shop job depending on whether the trailer is loaded and how accessible the legs are. We carry common gearboxes and shafts; full leg assemblies may need the shop. We always grease and inspect the landing gear during PM to catch the binding and corrosion that lead to failures.
Our mobile diesel technicians carry the tools and parts to diagnose and fix this on the shoulder or at your yard — 24/7/365 across Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas.
(303) 476-3622Trailer light faults are the most common DOT violation. We cover the 7-way, ground, and harness faults behind most failures.
Trailer brake faults cause DOT violations and runaway risk. We cover slack adjusters, chambers, and the spring brake system.
A sagging or bottoming trailer suspension damages cargo and tires. We cover air ride ride height, bags, and linkage.
Air bag failure sags the trailer and damages cargo. We cover finding the leak and when to replace vs. repair.
